South Carolina Part 2 & North Carolina Part 1 by Charlie

Whilst Mum was in England Will, Dad and I did some interesting stuff that I want to tell you about. I’m going to tell you what we did on the days. The first day that I’m going to tell you about is the day that we said goodbye to Mum.

Saturday 21st March

We drove to the airport, all really sad that Mum was going to leave us for twelve days. We tried to say goodbye to Mum as quickly as possible so that no one would cry but sadly that didn’t work there were quite a few tears shed (of course not by me or Will by Mum and Dad – duhh!!). We then got back to the van and opened the first card from mum (we got one for every day she was away). In the card we got a movie called Big Hero Six, which was a really good movie.

 Sunday 22nd March

On this day we just spent the whole day at the campsite. Will and I biked down to the camp store and Will kindly bought crabbing equipment for us all. We made our own crabbing stuff, which sadly didn’t work because we didn’t catch a single crab. It was probably the current, which made us not catch anything the reason I say that is because the current made our bait not sink. Will then went fishing for catfish and bass but didn’t catch anything. Whilst Will was fishing Dad and I played football for a while.

Monday 23rd March

Today we did quite a lot of stuff. We got a thing called a water taxi over to a place called Patriots Point where there’s aircraft carrier called the York Town and a submarine. Of course we explored the York Town, it was quite interesting we went around the place saw the engine room, went down all the incredibly steep steps. I really liked it in the submarine because I laughed so much at Dad getting stuck in one of the doorways. We then got the water taxi over to a place called Fort Sumter, where we didn’t do that much because we only had an hour there and we spend the whole time finding the answers for the junior ranger. We then had a delicious dinner at a smokehouse.

We left the campsite this morning and drove to a place called Charles Pinckney, which was a national monument. Here we did ANOTHER junior ranger program. The ranger there was interested in our trip and so he took our picture and put us on their Facebook page – famous at last.

We carried on driving to Myrtle Beach and on the way we got a puncture and had to go to a garage to get it fixed.

Wednesday 25th March

We had a chilled out day today. We had a brilliant nerf war in the woods at the campsite. At the end of the day we had a walk on the beach and we lay down on the beach and looked up at the stars.

Thursday 26th March

Today I got 5 hole-in-one’s in the ‘home of mini golf’. We woke up quite early and biked into the home of mini golf called Myrtle Beach. As we were biking we were trying our best to pick one of the best mini golf courses possible but it was tricky just to find any mini golf courses let alone one of the best ones. Finally we found a mini golf course but it had quite bad reviews so instead of playing mini golf there we had lunch there. Then we found a good mini golf course, which looked good so we went there. The course was called Mount Atlantas and I’m glad we went there because it was really good. We bought tickets, which let us play for the whole day so we managed to do both the courses. Out of both of the courses I got 5 hole-in-ones but not all of them counted because some of them were practice shots.

Friday 27th March

Today we had the whole day at the campsite in the pouring rain. At the beginning of the day we went to the nature centre and Will and I were planning on going to a bird talk. Sadly when we were there all the birds had gone away so the program only lasted about 5 minutes. But when everyone left all the birds started to come back so Will and I stayed there to watch them. We didn’t see any new birds but it was cool to watch them anyway.

We started to chat to one of the rangers and she took us into the forest to see an eastern screech owl, which was nesting there. Will managed to see it but sadly I didn’t.

We got back to the van and played a nerf war for a bit but then it started pouring with rain and nearly flooded the van. So that was the nerf war over.

Saturday 28th March

The best thing about today was we went horse riding again. Surprisingly my horse was the biggest and he was called Excalibur. Wills horse was called poo sorry that wasn’t it – it was called wee – sorry that wasn’t it either. What was it? Oh yeah Daniel. The ride was all flat and in a forest and luckily it didn’t rain on us.

Then we got back on the road and drove to a place called Cheraw State Park, which was a really nice campsite in a forest with a lake.

Sunday 29th March

In the morning we packed up ready to go for a hike. We started hiking and got to the forest where we were hoping to be able to ask directions. But when we got to the office it was shut so Dad took us in a random direction through the forest – he had no idea where to go. When we finally got out of the forest we were on a golf course where we nearly got hit by flying golf balls. We tried to find our way back into the forest to the trail we were meant to be on but when we got there there was no way in. We finally found a road back to the trail. We hiked the trail and at the end I put my walking stick into a wooden plank and it snapped! Luckily only the bottom snapped off so I could still use it. We had been walking for about 5 hours when we finally got back to the campsite so our legs were killing us!

Tuesday 31st March

Today was a really fun day. We woke up and got packed up to go canoeing. We walked over to the office to get the canoes and this time luckily the office wasn’t shut. Dad and I were in a canoe together and Will was on his own in a kayak. We were out all day and we saw lots of wildlife. Some of the things we saw were bald eagles diving to get fish, and osprey chicks waiting to get fed by their mother. On the lake Will and I did some fishing but didn’t catch anything, but it was fun anyway. We started canoeing back and arrived back after a long day on the water. When we got back Will started to go fishing again and when he came back he said he had seen a snake. So we rushed over to see it but sadly I didn’t get to see it as it went into the water.

Wednesday 1st April

Today was a driving day and we drove to North Carolina and got to a place called Carowinds. We didn’t know until we got there that it is a huge theme park that Dad had booked as a surprise for us as we had finished all our project books.

Thursday 2nd April

The best bit about today was we met mum at the airport. In the morning we got the bus from our campsite into the theme park. At the beginning I hated it because I didn’t like the roller coasters. But then we did a couple of easy ones and then one in a mine where you went nearly upside down which I really liked. That’s when I started to enjoy myself. We did another ride called the Ricochet which you felt like you were going to fall off because they made such sharp turns. At the end of the day we got a taxi to the airport to get mum – the taxi came really late and we were really worried. But it worked out ok and we got there just in time.

I really enjoyed having a few days of just ‘boys’ as we did some really fun stuff. But it was really nice to see mum again and being back together as a family.
